Rollout of We Speak results begins
More than 3,000 of us have spoken. Now, it’s time to find out what we said as the first wave of results from the We Speak faculty and staff survey, conducted last fall, are set for release.
Provost: Budget remains on sound footing
Despite uncertainty regarding provincial government operating grants and lower revenues, Western remains on solid financial footing, said Janice Deakin, provost and vice-president (academic).
Music Issue: Realizing her dream in face of reality
The setting sun on the villa was her stage, seating was in the backyard, and there were rugged mountains in the background of the Tuscan landscape. Kelsey Vicary was ready to step out on the stage in the role of Countess Almaviva last year in Le Nozze di Figaro.
Music Issue: Teaching, singing complete this artist
Throughout his operatic career, baritone Todd Wieczorek has had his fair share of wardrobe malfunctions. But his most embarrassing experience was during a high school summer theatre production when he split his pants while doing what he calls a “spread eagle.”
Music Issue: Physical reminders of music’s power
Fiona Wilkinson’s career as a flutist was just taking off when it almost ended one night on Vancouver Island in 1980.
Music Issue: Passing along her passion for performance
A blonde, middle-aged, former showgirl was the perfect role for actress Kristina Baron-Woods.
Music Issue: Reviving a lost art from long ago
Wilma Van Berkel is on a mission to resurrect the lute.
Music Issue: Bringing back the past by her own hands
Dressed in black, 16 musicians of Western’s Early Music Studio fill von Kuster Hall with the slow strains of a Baroque era song. Seated behind the other string musicians, the group’s sole guitar player skillfully strums the baroque guitar she crafted with her own two hands.
Music Issue: Flexing vocal beauty, strength on stage
In the quiet halls of the Don Wright Faculty of Music building, a female soprano voice reaches for the high notes. A piano accompanies the singer and each time it pauses, a second, stronger voice shows how it should be done. Then the other tries again.
Music Issue: Technical solutions to an off-key world
Don Stephenson sums himself up in seven words: “I like pianos and I like people.”
Music Issue: Understanding why we love that ‘punk rock thing’
Norma Coates’ first powerful childhood memory is a quick glimpse of the Beatles performing at Shea Stadium in 1965 on her TV.
Music Issue: Fulfilling potential through opera
You hear Theodore Baerg before you ever see him.
