Who doesn’t love a postdoctoral scholar? Well, now is your opportunity to show it.
Next week, Sept. 14-19, marks National Postdoctoral Appreciation Week, a celebration devoted to the contributions of postdoctoral scholars across Canada and the United States. Both Western’s School of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies and the Postdoctoral Association at Western have scheduled a number of events throughout the week.
On Monday, all new postdocs are invited to attend an orientation to receive information about working at Western. The event is scheduled for 12-1 p.m. in Health Sciences Addition H101. On Tuesday, a workshop will explore employment opportunities for postdocs and their spouses in and around London. The event is scheduled for 12-1:30 p.m. in University Community Centre (UCC) 147A. On Friday, a Mitacs Step workshop will centre on career professionalism. The event is scheduled for 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in UCC 147A.
Visit the Appreciation Week website for a full schedule and registration information.
In 2013, 108 institutions in the United States and Canada organized events to recognize postdoctoral researchers.
Western has more than 300 postdoctoral scholars at any time; 56 per cent per cent of those are international. Although housed across all faculties, the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Engineering, Science and Social Science boast the highest postdoc population.
More than 900 peer-reviewed publications are attributed to current postdocs. Last year, the university secured one Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship, two CIHR Postdoctoral Fellowships, two NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowships, one SHHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship and 11 MITACS Elevate internships.
