Brendan Fernandes, MFA’05, has been longlisted for the Sobey Art Award, among the most prestigious honours for young artists in the country.
Born in Kenya of Indian heritage, Fernandes immigrated to Canada in the 1990s. He completed the Independent Study Program of the Whitney Museum of American Art (2007), earned his BFA (2002) from York University and MFA (2005) from Western. He has exhibited internationally and nationally including exhibitions at The Art Gallery of Hamilton, The Studio Museum in Harlem, The Andy Warhol Museum, The Art Gallery of York University, Manif d’Art: The Quebec City Biennial, The Third Guangzhou Triennial and the Western New York Biennial through The Albright-Knox Art Gallery.
Fernandes was a finalist for the Sobey in 2010, and was on the longlist for the 2013 prize.
This year’s Sobey Award shortlist will be announced on June 3.
