Political Science professor Christopher Alcantara and Robarts Research scientist John Ronald have been named among the 2016 Petro Canada Young Innovator Awards. The program provides two awards to new researchers at Western ($12,000) and Robarts ($6,000) to recognize, promote and support particularly innovative work that impacts positively on the learning environment in their department, and has the potential to be of significance to society at large.
Alcantara examines the roots of collective action and intergovernmental cooperation in Canada, especially between Indigenous communities and the other three levels of government. Ronald, a Medical Biophysics professor, is focused on developing novel gene-based tools for various biomedical applications such as cell tracking and cancer detection/treatment.
