Tornadoes carry destructive power and fearsome beauty – and a new exhibit at the John Labatt Visual Arts Centre attempts to convey both.
Please – Do Not Take This Lightly is an amalgam of research and creation influenced by Engineering professor Greg Kopp’s tornado and wind studies.
The large-scale exhibition that runs from Jan. 10-24 in the ArtLab Gallery uses print-making, sculpture, video and sound to convey the impact of tornadoes on the environment and on the people who occupy those spaces. The exhibition is a collaboration between senior Visual Arts print-making students led by project co-ordinator professor Patrick Mahon and features guest artists Brenda Fuhrman, Ellen Moffat, Eeva Siivonen and Matt Trueman.
Visitors to the gallery will be able to see, hear and experience tornadoes – safely – and will also be able to purchase artists’ multiples at a pop-up Tornado Store. Proceeds from the sales will be split between the artists and weather-related disaster relief.
