Brescia University College hosts the 22nd annual Association of Canadian Home Economists Students (ACHES) conference titled, “Beyond the degree,” on Jan. 15-17.
More than 40 delegates from Brescia and across the country are currently registered. They will gain new insights into the field of Home Economics and be able to network with future colleagues.
As graduation approaches, many students question the steps they need to take to achieve their dreams. The ACHES 2009 Conference will help students make informed decisions about the right career for their personality, teach the necessary skills for success in the workplace, and provide tips on maintaining a healthy balance between work and home life.
The conference opens at 9 a.m. on Jan.15. Presenters will familiarize students with the current field of Human Ecology, share inspiring professional experiences and discuss how graduates can make a difference through politics and volunteering.
For a complete list of presentations and information about the speakers, please see the conference listing on-line at www.brescia.uwo.ca/about/news_and_events.
In addition to hearing presentations from an impressive lineup of speakers at Brescia, registrants will experience some of the charms of London with tours of the Western campus, Banting House National Historic Site, and the Labatt Brewery. They will also attend the Wine and Food Show at the Western Fair and enjoy meals at Aroma and Oscar Taylor’s.
The conference has been coordinated by the ACHES committee, a group of Foods and Nutrition students from the Student Human Ecology Association (SHEA). At the conference registrants learn to combine technological and theoretical skills with political and ethical responsibility in their professional lives.
SHEA President Cristina Bairos says, “We hope to encourage the home economic way of life, in which these young women and men will work towards improving the quality of life for individuals and families.”
Dr. June Matthews, SHEA Faculty Advisor, says she is proud of the students’ leadership, organizational, and fundraising skills in coordinating this event.
