The link between cervical cancer and the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is well accepted, but a leading researcher from the Ohio University Comprehensive Cancer Centre says HPV is also linked to other cancers including oral cancer.
Dr. Maura Gillison will present a lecture titled “The impact of HPV on prevention, screening and treatment of head and neck cancers” as part of the Sixth Annual Research & Education Day by the Department of Oncology at Western’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.
The full-day event, scheduled for Friday (June 12) at the Best Western Lamplighter Inn, is sponsored by Schulich, the London Regional Cancer Program at London Health Sciences Centre and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
Oncology Research & Education Day is organized by the CIHR-Strategic Training Program in Cancer Research and Technology Transfer (CaRTT). Principal investigator, Dr. Jim Koropatnick is pleased that CaRTT has recently been renewed for funding for six years (2009-2015) from the CIHR.
A total of $3,759,600 ($1,950,000 from the CIHR and $1,809,600 from Western and the Lawson Health Research Institute) will continue support of a comprehensive cancer research training program that spans basic science and medicine, and multiple research disciplines, all focused on making a difference in the lives of Canadians before, during, and after their experience with cancer.
