Ontario Minister of Health and Long-term Care Deb Matthews visited the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Physiology and Pharmacology at The University of Western Ontario Monday.
Matthews was given a tour of the newly renovated laboratory space on the second floor of the Dental Sciences Building. This renovation was financially supported by the Ontario Research Fund, the Canada Foundation for Innovation, and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
The awarded renovation project ($720,000), entitled “A Laboratory for Investigating the Role of Fetal Programming in Metabolic Syndrome” supports the research by Dr. Tim Regnault, Dr. Daniel Hardy, and Dr. Dean Betts regarding “the fetal origins of health and disease.”
After meeting with students and staff, Matthews met with Dr. Bryan Richardson, Chair of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, to discuss how to reduce low birth weight rates in Ontario, and better manage these infants for greater health outcomes long term.
