University of Western Ontario students from the Faculty of Health Sciences were named winners of a national Health Innovation Award after weighing in on how Canada can improve its health-care system.
In fall of 2009, the Health Council of Canada asked college and university students to answer the question: “What do you propose to help renew and sustain Canadian health care, and why?”
Students from across the country made their suggestions and a panel of judges from the Health Council of Canada selected the top submissions. There were two categories, both taken by Western submissions.
In the individual category, student Kathryn Nicholson took first place for her submission, “Patient Empowerment: The Key to Renewing Canada’s Health Care System.”
In the group category, Health Studies students Samantha Rivers, Erica Siba, Davy Tawadrous, and Sylvia Zhou were awarded first place for their entry, “Reducing Wait Times: Quality Pays Initiative & Patient Transfer Policy.”
The winning submissions will be featured at HealthCouncilCanada.ca and in a nationally-distributed e-newsletter. Winners will receive their awards at a reception in Ottawa on Feb. 22.
