Doreen Dinsdale, 86, a former Engineering staff member who created an important award to encourage women in engineering, died Feb. 13.
Dinsdale was an Engineering staff member from 1966 to 1987.
In the late 1960s Dinsdale recognized the modest number of female Engineering students and wanted to do something to encourage young women to pursue engineering. While still a staff member, she began to make annual gifts to establish an endowment.
The Doreen M. Dinsdale Award was made public after her retirement. Offered each spring to a female student graduating in one of Western Engineering’s undergraduate programs, it recognizes exemplary leadership and involvement in extra-curricular activities.
A memorial service was held Feb. 20.
Memorial gifts may be made to The University of Western Ontario, c/o the Doreen M. Dinsdale Award, Faculty of Engineering, London, ON N6A 5B9.
