University of Western Ontario Sociology Chair Michael Carroll has accepted a position at Wilfrid Laurier as the new dean of the Faculty of Arts, effective July 1.
A sociologist with a special interest in Catholicism, Carroll studies different aspects of religious culture on societies and migration and is known for historical studies of popular religion in Italy, Ireland and New Mexico.
“Laurier’s Faculty of Arts brings together traditional disciplines and interdisciplinary programs. The end result is an academic unit that is truly exciting, and I very much appreciate the opportunity to be the dean of such a faculty,” says Carroll.
“I look forward to working with full-time and part-time faculty, staff and students to build upon existing successes and to plan for an even better future in these challenging times.”
Carroll has served as vice-president and president of The University of Western Ontario Faculty Association. He focused on first-year teaching and has also taught numerous upper-level seminar courses. He has written seven books, 65 peer-reviewed articles and numerous reviews and solicited articles.
