While Linus van Pelt anxiously awaits the arrival of the Great Pumpkin, a far greater pumpkin will be crashing down at The University of Western Ontario on Thursday, Oct. 28.
In what has become an annual tradition, Western’s chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB) will be squishing a super-squash tomorrow on University College Hill as a 1,000-pound (453.5 kilograms) pumpkin will be dropped from a 120-foot (36.5 metres) crane at 2:30 p.m.
Funds raised at the event supports the work of EWB, which seeks to improve rural farmers’ livelihoods in Ghana and supports two undergraduate student volunteer placements in Africa this coming summer.
EWB smashes the pumpkin to symbolize smashing poverty and will be asking Western students, faculty and staff what they want to smash next, be it racism, intolerance, inequality, poverty or environmental destruction, for future events.
