With temperatures in London expected to soar to 36 degrees Celcius on Thursday, and the humidex predicted to make it feel more like 48 degrees, the university is urging members of the Western community to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary.
Western workers who normally work outdoors will be notified that for Thursday afternoon they are to work indoors unless outdoor work is absolutely necessary. Sport Western has moved the majority of their programming indoors this week into air conditioned facilities. Participants in programs such as softball and archery who are not able to move indoors have been given the option to choose another program for the week.
Temperatures will remain in the 30s until the weekend and humidex levels will also remain high.
Western’s Working in Hot Weather or Hot Workplace Environments Policy recommends escalating precautions when the humidex reaches 35 and higher, or air temperatures reach 32 degrees and higher. If you must be outside, dress in light clothing, apply sunscreen, drink more water and stay in the shade.
The Heat Stress Awareness Guide developed by the Occupational Health and Safety Council of Ontario offers good information on understanding and preventing heat related health issues.
