As the mainstay in the basketball rich Atlantic 10 conference, the St. Louis Billikens will travel north of the border later this month (Aug. 23) to play the Western Mustangs at Alumni Hall.
Legendary coach Rick Majerus, an icon in North American basketball circles, leads the Billikens. Majerus will be coaching against Brad Campbell who donned the purple and white as a Western Mustang in the early 90s. This game will feature a resurgent Billiken squad against a restructured Mustang lineup featuring many of the top recruits in Canada in their first collegiate action.
Majerus was an assistant with the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1986-87 season. In 1989 he landed at the University of Utah where, in his 16 years at the helm, the Utes won 10 conference titles and three tournament conference titles. Majerus led them to two NIT appearances and 10 NCAA tournament appearances, including four trips to the Sweet 16, two to the Elite 8 and one to the Final Four in 1998.
In two short years with the Billikens, Majerus led the team to its first Atlantic 10 tournament in 2009, their first post-season invitation on the heels of a 23-win season in 2009-10 where they made it to the third round of the College Basketball Invitational Tournament.
Game time on Aug. 23 is 7 p.m. at Alumni Hall. Tickets are available by visiting Western Mustangs Tickets or calling 519-661-3090.
