The University of Western Ontario women’s softball team wrapped up their undefeated season with a 6-0 victory over the University of Calgary Dinos Sunday afternoon in Windsor to capture the National Softball Championship.
Melinda Stevenson picked up the win, allowing just one hit over four innings, while Molly Yetman struck out eight over three inning of relief. Meg Hewins led Western’s scoring with a three-run homer, with Lindsey Martin and Tricia MacKay each contributed doubles for the Mustangs.
Western got to the final on the strength of a Yetman no hit, 11-strikeout performance earlier in the day in a 7-0 victory over Durham in the semi-final. Leslie Hanson delivered the big blow in that game with a three-run homer. Hewins was 3-for-3 with a double.
The previous day, the Mustangs won all three of their round robin games, bringing their five game offensive total to 41 runs, while allowing just one run against.
Yetman picked up the tournament nod for top pitcher while teammate Hewins won the batting award.
