It’s laughable that the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities and its minister are just talking about student-centred education now (Blowing it up, Sept. 6). We’ve been offering this type of environment at Academy of Learning Career and Business College in Kingston for the past 23 years.
However, when you learn that around 20 per cent of people in Ontario holding a university degree are in minimum-wage jobs, there is something to be said about supporting change or maybe just perceptions. In fact, I had an MBA deliver pizza to a staff meeting not too long ago.
Although I believe strongly in what a university education offers, I believe many prospective students don’t really know what they are getting and many become disgruntled when they don’t land that great job a degree – and the large investment of time and money – is supposed to get them in their mind.
The public sector is just now starting to see what we in the private education business have experienced for the past seven years: a McGuinty government that wants to control absolutely everything. God help this province should this man get a majority back.
Don’t give up your fight for what you believe in. As the old saying goes, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
