Hockey players Kelly Campbell and Matt Clarke have been named the Western Mustangs Goodlife Fitness Athletes of the Week for Dec. 3-9.
Campbell, a second-year Management and Organizational Studies (BMOS) student, had an excellent game Sunday, stopping 36 of 38 shots in Western’s 3-2 win over the top-ranked Queen’s Gaels. The St. Thomas netminder finished the first half with a 10-3 record, a .947 save percentage, a 1.84 goals against average and three shutouts.
“Kelly gives us a chance to win every game. The players have so much confidence in her so that when they make a mistake she bails them out,” said Chris Higgins, Mustangs head coach.
Clarke, an Engineering student, is playing in his first year with the Mustangs after joining the team from the Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL. He was key in last week’s 10-5 win over York, recording a hat trick and adding three assists in the victory. The London native enters the holiday break as the second leading scorer in all of CIS hockey with 26 points (12 goals, 14 assists), only one point out of first.
“We expected Matt to come in and contribute this season but I think his production has exceeded our expectations so far,” said Patrick Powers, Western interim head coach. “He is a tireless worker both on and off the ice and he is deserving to be second in OUA and CIS scoring.”
