Wrestler Ilya Abelev and hockey player Katelyn Gosling have been named the Western Mustangs Goodlife Fitness Athletes of the Week for Feb. 18-24.
Abelev, a third-year Kinesiology student, helped the Mustangs win a second consecutive OUA Men’s Wrestling Championship this past weekend, winning gold in the 72 KG weight class. It’s the third year in a row Abelev has won gold at the OUA Championships, winning at 65 KG in 2011 and 68 KG in 2012, as well as claiming gold in those classes at the 2011 and 2012 CIS Championships.
“Ilya’s technical experience showed (this weekend), as he was able to pull ahead against Brock’s Gabriel Turetsky as the gold medal match wore on. Ilya moved up a weight class from last year, and he’s adjusting well and will be a strong contender at the CIS championships,” said head coach Ray Takahashi.
Gosling, a London native, propelled the Mustangs into the OUA West Semi-Finals after scoring an incredible goal in triple overtime to sweep their OUA Quarterfinal series against Toronto. Gosling also recorded another goal in the contest and assisted on the tying goal with just over 30 seconds left to play that sent the game to overtime.
“Katelyn’s goal was one of the best, and most timely, goals I have seen in 20 years of coaching women’s hockey,” said head coach Chris Higgins.
