In recognition of their success in entrepreneurship and community building, Helen and Andy Spriet were awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws, honoris causa (LLD) at the Tuesday afternoon session of Western’s 311th Convocation.
Andy Spriet, who established Spriet Associates, a London-based engineering and architectural firm, spoke to graduates from the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and King’s University College, stressing the success that often arises out of adversity, if one is willing and able to persevere.

“Adversity gets you out of your comfort zone and stirs action. Action brings the possibility of positive results. The rest is up to you. Adversity brings opportunity,” Spriet said.
“Now that you have completed your university courses, you are somewhat educated. You now need to find meaningful employment or a purpose in life that pays its way. It does not appear to be easy these days but many opportunities exist, many probably unknown. Follow your dreams and find something you love,” he continued.
“And remember, in going through life, there are three important ingredients – love, hope and charity. Love is the greatest. Always have hope but never forget charity.”
