It was a year for the record books for Western Book Store employee James Walker, who returned home from the Special Olympics National Summer Games in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, with more hardware to add to his growing collection. Walker picked up four medals (gold, two silver and a bronze) in powerlifting (squat, bench, deadlift and overall weight class) last August.
For a perfect ending to his successful year, Walker was recently honoured by Special Olympics Ontario as Male Athlete of the Year. His father, Rick, was also recognized at the same event with the President’s Award for his contribution to the development and enhancement of Special Olympics Ontario programs.
Walker has no “off-season” as he now prepares for the 2019 Special Olympics Invitational Youth Games in May in Toronto, where he will be competing in floor hockey.
