The Western Mustangs men’s tennis team won its 25th provincial championship in program history, clinching the 2026 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) title in Toronto on Thanksgiving weekend.
It follows the Mustangs’ national victory in 2025.
The men’s team blanked Brock Badgers 7-0 in the quarterfinal before taking down the defending champion Toronto Varsity Blues in Saturday’s semifinal, 5-2. They wasted no time in reclaiming their spot atop the podium with a 4-0 victory in the gold medal game over Queen’s.
Doubles partners Liam Drover-Mattinen and Luke Adrian were unstoppable for Western, going 3-0 each in their singles matches while also sporting a perfect record in doubles play. Neither player dropped a set all weekend.
Both were named OUA all-stars, with Drover-Mattinen taking home Player of the Year honours. Adrian was also named Rookie of the Year.
“Knowing we had six rookies, to see how great they gelled with our veterans, it was a very satisfying year,” said Mustangs co-head coach Anthony Glavanic.
Kirill Chepushtanov and Jonathan Bulla touted undefeated records as well, winning four matches each.
The banner win also secures the Mustangs a berth into the 2027 Canadian University Championships next summer.
The Mustangs women’s team also hit the podium, securing bronze after a 6-1 win over York. It’s the team’s third consecutive bronze medal. Yutong Zou and Madeleine Martynyshyn went undefeated in the tournament, winning five matches each.
“We’re incredibly proud of the perseverance all of our girls showed throughout the tournament. Whether in a winning or losing effort, they fought hard to the last point and left it all on the court,” said co-head coach Chantal Forristal.
The Mustangs women’s team coaches, Maciek Gebczynski and Forristal, were awarded coach of the year.
