A new audible alert to indicate a voicemail message has been added to all VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phones on The University of Western Ontario campus today (April 1).
The upgrade was to be completed by 6 a.m. When the phone receiver is picked up, rather than hearing a continuous dial tone, an interrupted “stutter” dial tone will be heard if someone has left a voicemail message.
The red message waiting lamp will continue to be lit when new voicemail messages are received.
The addition of the audible dial tone is part of Information Technology Services’ commitment to ensue equitable access to its services and facilities.
A requirement of the upgrade process is a reboot of the VoIP phone set in order for these devices to download their new firmware image. This process can take up to 10 minutes, depending on the model of the phone. During this reboot, a phone cannot be used to make or receive calls, including 911.
A notice is expected to be sent to telephone co-ordinators with further information. Contact ITS Help Desk at 519-661-2111 ext. 83800 or helpdesk@uwo.ca if you have questions.
