I welcome the thoughtful and constructive statement issued by the UWOFA Board of Directors on April 14 and I thank them for their concrete proposals.
I could not agree more that the events of the last few weeks have presented an opportunity for us to create a better University. It is a chance to review and reflect upon our priorities, but most importantly it is a chance for me to listen to Western faculty, staff, students and alumni, and understand to a greater extent the challenges facing our institution.
We need to recreate a collegial relationship between the Senate and Board that’s respectful of the different roles each has in governance. The Board is also aware of this need and I look forward to starting that discussion with the Board at the April 23 meeting.
Honourable Justice Stephen Goudge’s review of Presidential compensation practices is expected in approximately 90 days, and at this time, the University will initiate a review of senior compensation models.
We will begin discussions related to our budget and planning model upon approval of the 2015 budget.
We are all acutely aware that these are challenging and uncertain times for the Ontario postsecondary education sector. Therefore, more than ever, it is imperative for us all to work together to support and elevate Western’s mission of excellence in teaching and research.
