Computer teaching pioneer offers gift of technology
Professor Emeritus John Walsh (Education) and wife Helen will continue funding the John and Helen Walsh faculty of Education Computer Technology Fund with a $100,000 donation.
When John Walsh taught the first computer course at H.B. Beal Secondary School in 1964, a wall had to be removed to bring the mammoth computer into the building.
Much has changed since then, but not Walsh’s conviction that students must be exposed to emerging technologies.
That’s why the Faculty of Education professor emeritus and his wife, Helen, are donating $100,000 to continue funding The John and Helen Walsh Faculty of Education Computer Technology Fund. This Fund helps the Faculty of Education with development and support of technology initiatives for faculty and students.
“Teachers need to use technology as an aid in teaching, so students with a wide range in abilities can learn effectively,” says Walsh, who retired in 1993 after 28 years at Western.
“Teachers have to call upon technology in all its forms to help students learn at their own rate.”
The John and Helen Walsh Faculty of Education Computer Technology Fund was created in 2000, and the Walshs’ latest gift reflects their commitment to improving the educational system by putting the latest technology in the hands of tomorrow’s teachers.
