BRAMPTON – The Western Mustangs cheerleading team added to its unprecedented run of Canadian championships Saturday, winning the 28th national championship in program history at the 2013 University and Open National Cheerleading Championships.
This is the sixth consecutive title for the Mustangs, extending a streak that began in 2008. Since the inception of the Canadian championship in 1985, Western has won all but one of the national titles, taking the crown each year from 1985-2006, 2008-13.
Competing in the University Large Co-ed Division, the Mustangs outscored their opponents in each of the championship’s two rounds, posting scores of 207.9 and 214 points to finish with 421.9 points overall. Queen’s University finished in second with a score of 410.1 and Saskatchewan claimed third place with 377.3 points.
Along with their title in the Large Co-ed Division, the Mustangs took second place in the University All Girl event, finishing with a score of 411.3 points, behind Laurier with 442.7 points and ahead of Memorial with 402.1.
Western was also successful in the women’s tumbling competition as first-year team member Jordyn Kent finished first, while third-year Mustang Loni Maxwell took second.
