Adrian Owen, a Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Cognitive Neuroscience and Imaging at The University of Western Ontario, will share his research findings with His Holiness the Dalai Lama later this week in São Paulo, Brazil.
Recognized as one of the world’s foremost neuroscientists, Owen will participate in a symposium entitled, States of Consciousness: Ancient Knowledge meets Modern Neuroscience, which is part of His Holiness’ official visit to Brazil this week.
“The Dalai Lama has been interested in the relationship between science and society for many years and, in particular, how scientific discoveries often create new and difficult ethical challenges,” Owen says. “Our neuroimaging research with vegetative state patients has created many such challenges and this is an exciting opportunity for me to discuss the wider implications of this research with him.”
The symposium, scheduled for 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, will feature a dialogue between His Holiness and local and international researchers on states of consciousness and the effects of contemplative practices, such as meditation, on the brain. The event will be held at the Golden Hall, São Paulo World Trade Center.
